Taking care of your gums by regular dental visits could help hold heart disease at bay
Friday 29th November 2013
Atherosclerosis progression and changes in periodontal health Taking care of your gums by brushing, flossing, and regular dental visits could help hold heart disease at bay. Researchers at Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health have shown for the first time that as gum health improves, progression of atherosclerosis slows to a clinically significant degree. Findings appear online in the Journal of the American Heart Association. Artherosclerosis, or the narrowing of arteries through the build-up of plaque, is a major risk factor for heart disease, stroke, and death. To read the full story click here. Benefits of Root Canal Treatment Over Tooth Extraction
Sunday 10th November 2013
When tooth decay has breached the interior of a tooth, it may necessitate either a root canal or tooth extraction. Though both procedures aim to rid the patient of further discomfort and infection, most dentists will attempt a root canal before resorting to removing the entire tooth. While some patients may be initially distressed over the prospect of having a root canal, this process actually has several advantages over extraction. Root canal treatment has a quicker recovery time, and the tooth can be saved. A root canal removes only the infected pulp and bacteria inside the tooth, which allows the patient to keep the tooth and experience a less intensive recovery period than if the whole tooth were extracted. Root canal treatment offers a better cosmetic outcome. No matter which tooth is extracted, it can become a conspicuous feature of a person’s smile that makes them feel self-conscious. In contrast, a root canal allows a dentist to remedy a patient’s oral health issues without affecting the look of their smile. In the vast majority of cases, no one can tell if a patient has undergone a root canal procedure, other than the dentist and patient. Root canal treatment offers a better prognosis. A missing tooth can affect more than a person’s self-confidence. Under some circumstances, it can also cause the surrounding gum tissue and bone to weaken and recede, which can then impact the stability of nearby teeth. This may then necessitate dental implant surgery, a process that generally takes several months to complete. To minimize the need for these additional risks and procedures, most dentists will administer a root canal before resorting to extraction. What is a Root Canal? What is Endodontics?
Monday 28th October 2013
The word endodontic comes from the Greek word eno meaning "within" and the Greek word odous meaning "tooth". Endodontic therapy, also known as a root canal (therapy), is a treatment of the tooth aimed at clearing infection, as well as protecting the tooth from subsequent infections. The treatment is carried out in the pulp of the tooth. The term "root canal" when meaning endodontic therapy is, in fact, wrong. Root canals are part of a tooth, the hollows within a tooth where the nerve tissue, blood vessels, and some other cells are located. Root canal is a place in a tooth, while endodontic therapy is a dental procedure. However, the term "root canal" has become widely used with the meaning of endodontic therapy. More evidence for a link between oral and heart health
Wednesday 9th October 2013
High-dose statin may reduce gum inflammation A new study offers more evidence of a link between oral and heart health. It found that high-dose statins can reduce gum inflammation in heart disease patients in as little as 4 weeks. The researchers report their findings in the latest online issue of the Journal of the American College of Cardiology. Statins are commonly prescribed for lowering blood cholesterol. Although we need some cholesterol for good health, too much of the fatty substance clogs up arteries and causes atherosclerosis, an inflammatory condition that leads to heart attacks, stroke, and peripheral vascular disease. Tooth decay hits quarter of five-year-olds, survey suggests
Sunday 29th September 2013
More than a quarter of five-year-olds in England have tooth decay, although the number is down, a survey suggests. The analysis by Public Health England looked at data from 133,000 dental examinations across the country, covering 21% of five-year-olds. It suggested 27% of all five-year-olds had tooth decay, down from 30% in a 2008 survey. The British Dental Association (BDA) said there remained a "deep chasm" between the best and worst areas.
