Benefits of Root Canal Treatment Over Tooth Extraction
Sunday 10th November 2013
When tooth decay has breached the interior of a tooth, it may necessitate either a root canal or tooth extraction. Though both procedures aim to rid the patient of further discomfort and infection, most dentists will attempt a root canal before resorting to removing the entire tooth. While some patients may be initially distressed over the prospect of having a root canal, this process actually has several advantages over extraction. Root canal treatment has a quicker recovery time, and the tooth can be saved. A root canal removes only the infected pulp and bacteria inside the tooth, which allows the patient to keep the tooth and experience a less intensive recovery period than if the whole tooth were extracted. Root canal treatment offers a better cosmetic outcome. No matter which tooth is extracted, it can become a conspicuous feature of a person’s smile that makes them feel self-conscious. In contrast, a root canal allows a dentist to remedy a patient’s oral health issues without affecting the look of their smile. In the vast majority of cases, no one can tell if a patient has undergone a root canal procedure, other than the dentist and patient. Root canal treatment offers a better prognosis. A missing tooth can affect more than a person’s self-confidence. Under some circumstances, it can also cause the surrounding gum tissue and bone to weaken and recede, which can then impact the stability of nearby teeth. This may then necessitate dental implant surgery, a process that generally takes several months to complete. To minimize the need for these additional risks and procedures, most dentists will administer a root canal before resorting to extraction.
