What is bad breath (halitosis)?

Wednesday 30th January 2013

Reviewed by Dr Nigel Carter, chief executive British Dental Health Foundation

Most adults suffer from bad breath occasionally, although it may affect up between a quarter and half of adults on a regular basis. Occasional bad breath is usually caused by strong foods like garlic, onions and coffee. Persistent bad breath is usually brought on by the breakdown of proteins by bacteria somewhere in the mouth, usually as a result of gum disease or dry mouth. However, problems with the airways, oesphagus and stomach can also lead to bad breath. Smoking causes its own type of bad breath as well as leading to higher levels of gum disease and dry mouth.

What is tooth decay?

Tuesday 22nd January 2013

Tooth decay is when acids in your mouth dissolve the outer layers of your teeth. You may also have heard it called dental decay or dental caries. Over time, symptoms of tooth decay can include: toothache, pain when eating or drinking, visible discoloured spots on your teeth.

If left untreated, a build up of plaque (see below) could lead to complications of tooth decay such as gum disease (gingivitis) or a dental abscess. Regular dental checks can help your dentist spot signs of tooth decay early and identify any cavities (holes or damage in the teeth). Tooth decay is much easier to treat successfully in its early stages. Read more at: http://www.nhs.uk/conditions/Dental-decay/Pages/Introduction.aspx
