Root canal is a process of removing an infected or severely inflamed nerve tissue from the roots of a tooth.  If left untreated, an infected or severely inflamed nerve tissue can cause an abscess.  An abscess may show on an X-ray as a dark spot or radiolucency at the apex of the root.  This is actually bone loss in the jaw.  It is very important to treat this problem before it deteriorates. We are proud of our specialty Doctor in Endodontics Dr. Irene Soriano, who uses an operating microscope to conduct root canal treatment. Benefits of our Microscope Enhanced Endodontic or Root Canal treatment include:

  • Improve accuracy of microsurgical or root canal procedures through magnification and ability to use smaller instruments.
  • Fewer traumas to your tooth structure and result in better or faster healing with minimal need for secondary procedures.
  • Ability to see root structure in greater detail

Benefits of our Microscope Enhanced Endodontic or Root Canal Treatment

When tooth decay has breached the interior of a tooth, it may necessitate either a root canal or tooth extraction. Though both procedures aim to rid the patient of further discomfort and infection, most dentists will attempt a root canal before resorting to removing the entire tooth. While some patients may be initially distressed over the prospect of having a root canal, this process actually has several advantages over extraction.

Root canal treatment has a quicker recovery timeand the tooth can be saved. A root canal removes only the infected pulp and bacteria inside the tooth, which allows the patient to keep the tooth and experience a less intensive recovery period than if the whole tooth were extracted.

Root canal treatment offers a better cosmetic outcome. No matter which tooth is extracted, it can become a conspicuous feature of a person’s smile that makes them feel self-conscious. In contrast, a root canal allows a dentist to remedy a patient’s oral health issues without affecting the look of their smile. In the vast majority of cases, no one can tell if a patient has undergone a root canal procedure, other than the dentist and patient.

Root canal treatment offers a better prognosis. A missing tooth can affect more than a person’s self-confidence. Under some circumstances, it can also cause the surrounding gum tissue and bone to weaken and recede, which can then impact the stability of nearby teeth. This may then necessitate dental implant surgery, a process that generally takes several months to complete. To minimize the need for these additional risks and procedures, most dentists will administer a root canal before resorting to extraction.

Benefits of Root Canal Treatment Over Tooth Extraction

The word endodontic comes from the Greek word eno meaning "within" and the Greek word odous meaning "tooth". Endodontic therapy, also known as a root canal (therapy), is a treatment of the tooth aimed at clearing infection, as well as protecting the tooth from subsequent infections. The treatment is carried out in the pulp of the tooth. The term "root canal" when meaning endodontic therapy is, in fact, wrong. Root canals are part of a tooth, the hollows within a tooth where the nerve tissue, blood vessels, and some other cells are located. Root canal is a place in a tooth, while endodontic therapy is a dental procedure. However, the term "root canal" has become widely used with the meaning of endodontic therapy. What is a Root Canal? What is Endodontics?

Modern endodontic treatment makes it possible to save a tooth in which the nerve, commonly referred to as the pulp, is diseased, e.g. by infection or inflammation due to tooth decay. By means of microscopic root canal treatment even a tooth whose nerve is irreversibly damaged can be preserved and the bone can return to normal.

Teeth may have one to three roots with up to three root canals each, which contain the pulp. Some of these canals are as thin as a hair. For root canal treatment to be successful it is important to detect and treat all root canals.

One of the most revolutionary developments in the field of endodontics is the operating microscope, which provides extreme magnification. This makes it possible to identify and treat even minute structures and problem areas. Thus pain can be minimized and excellent long-term results achieved.
